Finnish furniture design is conquering the world

The ON2 Wood sofa bed, designed by Tapio Anttila, has been awarded the prestigious Prize Designs for Modern Furniture in recognition of its outstanding design and practicality. Originally established by MoMA, the award is presented in collaboration with the Chicago Athenaeum and Global Design News.
According to the jury, ON2 Wood stood out for its practical and timeless design. Lightweight and versatile, the sofa bed easily transforms into two separate single beds or a double bed without complex mechanisms. Features such as mattress covers concealed in the armrests and removable, washable upholstery make it both durable and user-friendly.
Designer Tapio Anttila is known for his ability to create furniture that not only looks beautiful but also addresses practical, everyday challenges.
“An award is always important, but the fact that a product resonates with its time and its users is even more valuable than any recognition,” Anttila commented.
The ON2 Wood sofa bed embodies the tradition of practical thinking in Finnish design—while meeting the needs of modern living. It is not just a design object, but also a smart solution that offers both a comfortable place to sleep and a stylish seat without compromise.
“Award recognitions like this not only advance the field of design—they also strengthen the position of Finnish design on the global stage,” reflects Tapio.
Anttila was the only Finnish winner in the Seating Units category. This year’s competition featured 40 designers and brands from around the world. The award ceremony will take place in October in Athens, Greece.
