In summer 2026, the Tahiti Gallery at Säynätsalo Town Hall will host Designing Homes Without Waste – We Bring Nature Home, an exhibition by designer Kati Hienonen from Jyväskylä. The exhibition explores the role of design in building a more sustainable future.
At the centre of the exhibition is a home textile collection made from Finnish sheep wool and designed through circular economy principles. The entire lifecycle of the material has been considered from the outset — from raw material sourcing to use and back into circulation. At the same time, the exhibition highlights safe materials and production processes that avoid leaving harmful chemicals in the environment.
In Hienonen’s work, design is not only about creating objects, but also about responding to some of the defining challenges of our time. The exhibition examines how material choices, production methods and everyday aesthetics can support the transition toward a lower-carbon and more responsible way of living.
“Every material and production decision shapes the kind of relationship we build with the environment and the behaviours we normalise. Nature is often treated merely as a source of inspiration, as if it were endless. For me, nature is a stakeholder — one that, at its best, we can also give something back to,” says Hienonen.
