Encounters, interaction and the discovery of new perspectives are central themes of Helsinki Design Week 2026. This year’s theme, “The Encounter”, invites audiences to explore design through the connections between people, ideas and the environment.
Founded in 2005, Helsinki Design Week will once again spread across Helsinki at the turn of August and September. Now the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordic region, it brings together around 150 events, ranging from exhibitions and workshops to open studios, talks, showroom events and urban installations.
The 2026 theme, The Encounter, looks at the city as a constantly evolving network of encounters. It highlights the role of design in creating new connections and encourages audiences to consider how unexpected encounters can generate new perspectives, collaborations and solutions.
According to Kari Korkman, founder of Helsinki Design Week, the significance of the creative industries is built above all on connections between people.
– The cultural sector operates in a complex balance between artistic, economic and societal objectives. Truly new ideas often emerge at the margins, through informal connections and across organisational boundaries, Korkman says.
Design Market Takes a New Direction
One of the festival’s best-known events, Design Market, will open the festival weekend with a new Design Supermarket concept. The new format expands the traditional design marketplace, bringing together Finnish and international designers and design companies, alongside the Collectors’ Market, dedicated to vintage, recycled and one-of-a-kind design.
Open Studios Opens the Doors to Designers’ Workspaces
Another key programme is Open Studios, which invites designers, architects, artists and other creative professionals to open their workspaces to the public on two festival Fridays. Visitors can gain insight into creative processes, working environments and the people behind the products and services.
Design Across the City
Beyond the main events, Helsinki Design Week is built around dozens of partner and satellite events. The programme includes Design Diplomacy, Children’s Design Week, PechaKucha Night and Helsinki Design Night, which concludes the festival.
Events take place across museums, galleries, companies, studios and public spaces, making design a visible part of Helsinki’s urban landscape.
Over more than two decades, Helsinki Design Week has established itself as one of Europe’s leading design and architecture festivals. Each year, it provides an overview of current developments in design, architecture, material research, fashion and urban planning, while strengthening Helsinki’s position as an international design city and a meeting place for the creative industries.
