HARDCORE New Finnish Design
New Finnish Design at the New York Design Week,
15 –17 May, Meatpacking District, New York City
Design Forum Finland, the Finnish Consulate General in New York and the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York will jointly stage an event presenting new Finnish design, giving the main role to the leading names of young Finnish design and companies in the field. The participants will be announced in February.
There will also be a meeting lounge and other satellite events (including the launch of Finnish Design Yearbook 08–09). The purpose is to update perceptions of Finnish design, to enhance design exports and to market Helsinki as a design city.
"Hardcore is a concept often used to describe a phenomenon representing a more severe or extreme line in its specific genre. It is also a concept implying the authentic and original form of something. Finnish design and Finnishness are different and slightly extreme when compared, for example, with other Scandinavian design. This may often remain unnoticed by us. Hardcore is an exhibition presenting both known and slightly unknown aspects of Finnish design. The products and companies represent genuine, daring and different design: Finnish design”, designer Ilkka Suppanen, curator of the exhibition.
