POLAR ELECTRO OYPOLAR FT80 TRAINING COMPUTERDesign: Visa Rauta 2006–2008 (Product Design Series) Polar is familiar with the use of design for product development: the company has had its own design team for the past 15 years. The latest generation of training computers focuses on appearance and ease of use. Data is conveniently transferred wirelessly to web services and the user’s own computer. Founded in 1976, Polar is a pioneer in the design and manufacturing of heart-rate monitors. Over a period of thirty years the company has expanded to provide a range of many other solutions and training systems for outdoor recreation, exercise and sports. Polar’s expertise is involved in many top-level sporting events and the company has also participated in various physiological and sports-medicine studies in association with research institutes in the field. Polar products are sold in some 80 countries, with Europe and North America as the main market areas. Polar also has a long tradition of applying design in product development. For the past fifteen years the company has had its own design team, and many of its products have won prizes and awards in design competitions around the world. In September 2008 Polar’s new flagship product, the FT80 training computer, became one of the latest additions to its product line. The original sales goals have been exceeded several times over, showing that this new device also attracts consumers. The FT80 received the German iF Product Design Award in January 2009. The design of this device of the new generation focuses on its appearance and ease of use. The FT80 training computer is light, thin and streamlined, pleasant to use even in heavy training. Carefully considered details, the black colour and high-sheen glass of the training computer invite use even when not exercising. The wireless Flow Link interface transfers data conveniently from the FT80 to the user’s own computer and to a personal training program on the Internet.
